We are very delighted to bring to the stage in Finland a dance performance titled ‘Sansoo’ (meaning ‘mountains and water’ in Korean) by Jeju Special Self-governing Provincial Dance Company in honor of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and Finland.
This performance transcends the classical ways in which our ancestors depicted ‘Sansoo’(mountains and water) on canvases and brings to life the beauty and joy of ‘Sansoo’ in a harmonized manner as if mountains and water come to life and move coming out of the canvases. By showcasing a range of dances including royal court dance, traditional dance, Jeju folk dance, and creative dance, this show demonstrates the preservation and evolution of Korean dances while following our traditions with long-lasting history. In addition, as Finland boasts a beautiful natural environment of green forests and blue lakes, the performance unfolds a picturesque contrast of light and shade found in a number of magnificent scenery in Jeju like a panoramic display by using dances. Each of the ten scenes embodies a unique tone and mood, aiming to evoke empathy from the international community for Jeju’s sentiment and the profound beauty
of Korea.
We hope that this show serves as an opportunity to strengthen friendly relations and cultural exchange between Korea and Finland and also to promote cooperative relations between Jeju and Finland.
‘Sansoo’ (mountains and water)
Mountains that stand steadfast in one place but transform into various appearances every moment.
Water that flows endlessly, never ceasing, despite its constant change and movement.
By paying attention to the fundamental attributes of nature, the performance titled ‘Sansoo’ (mountains and water) embodies a philosophy that when human beings discover the existential meaning and recognize and read into being of nature, it would come to us as the meaningful being.
Though being itself holds significance, this show gains even greater relevance as it is based on the coexistence as a view of nature, a unique perspective of Eastern world. It portrays the artist’s struggles during the creation of a piece of work, using a painter. The performance depicts in the space of the ‘Sansu’ a combination of vitality of everchanging nature in Jeju scenery and the serene emotions deeply embed ded in the lives of Jeju people. The painter witnesses the moment the dance seamlessly blends into the scenery, as if each color emerges from the landscape with many hues. Then, in front of the painter, a n exhilarating group dance unfolds consistent with the spirit of oceans, mountains, earth, and heaven, ingrained in every dance move.
