Women & Cocaine is a London based film series that celebrates the pioneering women of pre-code cinema, who rebelled against suffocating Victorian standards of femininity and pushed boundaries with their newfound economic and social independence. Pre code refers to the period between 1930-1934, beginning with the end of silent cinema and ending at the introduction of mandatory film censorship.
During these four short years, a woman’s place was no longer at home and in the kitchen, it was out in the workforce by day, and in the clubs at night. Hollywood took note of this new image, and capitalized on women’s desire to see themselves represented on screen, and what followed were some of the most exciting, unapologetic and sexually liberated depictions of women ever seen on screen.
