Ancient yoik and contemporary soundscapes come together to create music that is universal and relevant to our time.
Sámi musician Wimme Saari comes from Kelottijärvi in Northwest Lapland. A virtuoso in traditional yoik styles, he has also developed a highly original, contemporary yoik style that echoes the music of our time – even including sound art.
Tapani Rinne has lived his entire life in the urban environment of Helsinki, but his family roots are in the Satakunta region in Western Finland. The wide-open rural landscapes of his childhood may explain why Rinne’s saxophone and clarinet phrases have a strong sense of space, a certain “Nordic-ness”.
