UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra gets new talents for its soloists from the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences’ music degree program.
Kamilla Kavala, Chiara Orlandi, Elina Karden, Chiara Galvani and Iina Johanson shine as UMO’s vocal soloists. Risto Kauppinen, Sakurako Ishyama and Laura Helander complete the front sax row. The orchestra’s rhythm section is completely renewed, as Sonja Kaipainen masters the piano, Aaron Koskelainen takes up the bass and Luukas Viskari the guitar. On drums, there is Metropolia’s lecturer Tommi Rautiainen.
UMO and young talents are guided by chief conductor and artistic director Ed Partyka, a pedagogue who teaches at several European universities.
The concert will feature the music made famous by one of the most significant vocalists in the jazz history, Ella Fitzgerald. During the big band golden period, Fitzgerald recorded a number of beloved songs such as It’s Only a Paper Moon, Cheek to Cheek and Lullaby of Broadway.
