Pianist and saxophonist Horace Silver was one of the pioneers of the Hard Bop. In 1953, he founded The Jazz Messenger with drummer Art Blakey. His partners in jazz also included e.g. Stan Getz, with whom he made his first recording in 1950, and Miles Davis, for whom he composed. Silver recorded on the Blue Note for decades before starting his own label.

Silver's striking, addictive compositions that mix different styles are based on blues and gospel, with which he often combined Latin rhythms. Silver's jazz standards’ melodies are very recognizable, providing a perfect base for improvisation.

UMO Helsinki Ensemble pays tribute to Silver by playing one of his most famous compositions Song for My Father, his first hit The Preacher and many more.
