On the theme of money, capitalism, individuality and social value, subfrau explores with the audience the concepts of 'non-ownership', 'free' and 'money'. What does it mean to be human under late capitalism? Can the world be saved and if so, is it worth it?
This year the cult-status attained drag king group, subfrau, celebrates their 20th jubilee. The group was founded because the members, as female students, felt anger and frustration with their education at the Theater Academy in Helsinki, which they felt was hierarchical and misogynistic.
The group was founded at a time when feminism was barely visible in the Nordic countries. Drag kings rarely appeared in theater and the word “feminism” was risky in case it would alienate the audience. Subfrau has since toured their work throughout the Nordic region (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands).
Subfrau has done much to establish feminism in the Nordic region and is now returning with the jubilee performance This is Not My Money in the city from which they were founded. The piece will be performed three times at Cirko, once in English and twice in Swedish.
