The tragicomedy "The Zone" is based on the play of the well-known contemporary Ukrainian playwright Pavlo Arie "At the Beginning and End of Time." The play has won Ukraine's most prestigious theater award, the "Golden Pectoral."
"The Zone" tells the story of a Ukrainian family living in isolation within the Chornobyl exclusion zone, despite potential consequences. The matriarch of the family, an elderly woman named Prisya, leads everything. She befriends mermaids, sings mystical folk songs, and consumes hallucinogenic mushrooms. Living with her are her daughter Slava, weary of life's challenges, and her developmentally disabled son Vovtshik.
This play emphasizes the importance of the homeland to its inhabitants, the love for the motherland, and the commitment to it despite various obstacles. These qualities are exemplified through the main character, Prisya, who also symbolizes the strength of Ukrainian women who have survived numerous disasters, including World War II and the Chornobyl catastrophe.
