The Songs of Ellen brings the listeners to the world of German Lied.

The Songs of Ellen brings the listeners to the world of German Lied.

Robert Schumann’s song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben (A Woman’s Love and Life, 1840) tells the arc of a relationship from a woman’s perspective: first meeting and falling in love, exchanging rings and the birth of a child, ending with the death of the spouse.

Piano virtuoso Clara Schumann composed Soirées musicales (1836) at a young age before Robert and she had married. Robert was greatly impressed by the songs, and he praised them in his writings. A selection of Clara’s songs will be heard at the concert.

In 1825 Franz Schubert composed seven songs for Walter Scott's epic poem The Lady of the Lake. At the center of the story is Ellen Douglas, whose love is rivaled by many men.
