The Night of Science: Sandlines, The Story of History film screening and discussion

On the Night of Science, artist Francis Alÿs’ first feature, Sandlines, The Story of History (Iraq 2018–2020) will be performed at Finnkino Maxim Movie Theatre.

In it, children from a mountain village near Mosul re-enact the history of Iraq, beginning with the secret Sykes–Picot Agreement of 1916 and ending with the Islamic State’s 2016 reign of terror. Through play, children explore their past in order to understand their present.

Since its premiere on 25 January 2020, Sandlines, the Story of History has been included in 16 festivals, travelled to 10 countries, with over 26 screenings, and been given a “Best Feature Documentary Award” by a children’s jury.

The film will be shown twice with a discussion about the film’s themes between screenings.
