The Night of Science 2024: Volcanoes, earthquakes, early humans and false information

Come and join on a journey to the world of geosciences and geography, as part of the Night of Science 2024 event!

Ancient volcanoes of Finland
What kind of stories do rocks tell about ancient Finnish volcanoes? Get to know rocks that have erupted from volcanoes in the past and hear about other interesting aspects of them.

Instrumental seismology turns 100 years
2024 marks the 100th anniversary of instrumental seismology in Finland. Measurements from seismic instruments have played key roles in assessing seismic hazards to nuclear power plants, identifying zones of enhanced earthquake activity, and global monitoring of nuclear tests. The Institute of Seismology tells about the history of seismic measurements in Finland, how they do them, and about current and future research trends in seismology.

Early Human Life
The hominin ecology group at University of Helsinki is interested in ancient ancestors, the environments they lived in and how they evolved and interacted with other species. Now, it's possible to hold your great-great-great-great-great-great-great (+ many more greats) grandparent's skull and their stone tools and hear what they would have been up to.

Test your media literacy: Identifying misleading information in world news
You too read, hear, and see news and events from around the world in the media almost daily. News about geographical phenomena reaches people quickly, and the flow of news is never-ending. The deluge of geomedia from around the world and its events requires good critical geomedia literacy skills from the reader.
