Stefan Lindgren: In Transit

Bulevardi 27, 00180 Helsinki
Aleksanterin teatteri

In Transit - opera is about people in motion, about constantly being a stranger wherever one may be, but also about the feeling of being at home everywhere.

In Transit - opera is about people in motion, about constantly being a stranger wherever one may be, but also about the feeling of being at home everywhere.

The plot takes from Hollywood's dream factory to 1950s Stockholm and Helsinki, to finally land in the Ostrobothnian countryside and The Yellow House, where the family saga of Sem, Vera, and Galadriel begins. Family secrets are unraveled one by one; extramarital relationships, lies, infidelity, and homosexual inclinations. At the center stands The Yellow House, the family estate, where everyone eventually returns. There, they will all face their most difficult choices and the consequences of those choices. Can we ever be free from our past, or are we inevitably its prisoner?

In Transit is a Nordic co-production between Opera BOX and Swedish Chamber Opera Company. The production features prominent and established opera singers from both Finland and Sweden, such as Monica Groop, Alexandra Büchel, Johan Wållberg, Niklas Spångberg, and Teppo Lampela. One of Finland's top orchestras, the chamber orchestra Avanti!, also participates in the production. Composer Stefan Lindgren is a full-time orchestral pianist at the Royal Philharmonic in Stockholm, but he is increasingly sought after as a composer. In the opera IN TRANSIT, Lindgren has drawn inspiration from the novel's dramatic structure with parallel times and places, using multiple tonal centers and polytonal 12-tone techniques to create double exposures where different times and places can coexist simultaneously.
