Sasha Mäkilä's 20th Anniversary Concert: One Thousand and One Nights
In the autumn, the Helsinki Metropolitan Orchestra (HMO) is celebrating conductor Sasha Mäkilä's 20th anniversary as an artist. Stories come to life and transport their listeners from the darkness of November to Eastern lands, the sun of Spain, and 16th-century Germany.
To start the concert, the orchestra will perform the grand overture from Richard Wagner's opera The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. Composer Édouard Lalo (1823-1892) would have turned 200 years old this year, and in honor of this jubilee year, the concert will feature one of his most performed works, the captivating Spanish Symphony.
As the climax of the evening, the concert will embark on a journey through the tales of One Thousand and One Nights with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic suite Scheherazade. The same piece was performed twenty years ago at the Sheremetev Palace when Sasha Mäkilä made his debut as a conductor.
