What am I thinking about when I think about paper? I think about the sound, the surface, how it feels between my fingers. I think about its porousness and memory.
I think about the will of the paper, how it folds. Fibres interweaving. Tearing and metamorphosis.
Water, movement, pressure.
When I think about paper, I think about time.

pulp is an exhibition organized by the artists of Helsinki Papermaking Association. These artists share the interest in slow processes and the collaboratory attitude with the material. Paper takes many forms and meanings in their artworks, moving from mere material to a subject, becoming conceptual – an idea. The printmaking paper strips, textile left-overs, self-grown fibre plants, outworn bedsheets and old paper archives turned obsolete all transform into contemporary art – some of the materials still carrying the meanings from their previous lives, some taking utterly new forms and contents.

As well as wanting to find more ecological art practices, the artists want to emphasise the agency of the material. When working on a material, the hands begin to think thoughts awakened by the material. It could be said that the attributes of the material come into work alongside the conscious thought process of the artist.
