Johanna Almark´s brand-new chamber opera Orlando is based on Virginia Woolf's novel, which also gained cult fame as a film. Woolf is said to have written this satirical work to keep her own melancholy at bay - to keep me from Drowning in"a great sea of melancholy".
It is performed by the composer herself, and The Hearts of Oak, a chamber ensemble of seven players.
The music composed by Johanna Almark moves through time and styles in the journey of the ageless Orlando from a noble youth of the 16th century, who dreams of becoming a composer, to an adult woman of the 20th century [sic!], who succeeds as a composer.
The English core of the libretto was created by Nely Keinänen. The libretto was edited by the composer in collaboration with Heta Heiskanen, who also wrote the lyrics in Finnish. The Swedish lyrics are from the writer Margareta Nordström's translation of Orlando.
