In the exhibition titled My Shelter at the Helsinki Civil Defense Museum, Eriz Moreno depicts his encounters with bomb shelters located in the basements of apartment buildings across Finland using photographs and objects. These shelters, historically regarded as remnants of the Cold War era, have received little attention, but have unfortunately reemerged in recent discussions.

Moreno’s interest in bomb shelters arose shortly after he settled in Finland in 2019. Similar to the monthly test alarms on the first Monday of each month at noon, the orange squares and blue triangles of bomb shelter door stickers remind us where to seek protection. Although modern bomb shelters have never been needed for their primary purpose, their significance is undeniable.

Instead of selecting individual photographs and objects for the exhibition, Moreno has arranged the exhibition space in a way that provides viewers with a comprehensive understanding of the various roles of shelters in Finnish society today. The exhibition primarily highlights the versatility of shelter use and design. The fragmented exhibition curated by the artist takes us into an abstraction reminiscent of our own apartment building bomb shelter.
