Misa Saraste: The Ghost of Antofagasta - 31 songs of depression and hope

Misa Saraste is a visual artist based in Helsinki. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Finland and abroad. Her work is characterized by a playfulness that is conveyed in a surrealistic mood and even an infantile freshness.

"This is not a lament. These songs have been an incredible trip to the mind and back again and again and again. They were created completely intuitively, driven by emotion, without attempt or evidence of skill.

In these songs, I am completely naked. It all started in Chile, in Antofagasta. I was there doing an art project. As a by-product, one of life's surprises, I started to photograph ghosts: all kinds of spots on the walls, puddles in the streets and stains where I saw figures. I developed a method of tracing the shape of a ghost on paper, first with just water.

Next, I release the inks into a puddle of water, letting them spread freely. Once the ink is dry, it's my turn to sing. I draw out all that I see, experience and feel in that moment. I frantically fill the paper with small lines or add just a few details to help the character come to life. With these ghosts, I have experienced an enormous amount of comfort, love, joy, sadness, longing, playful joy. Everything I've ever longed for."
