MalmiJazz: Kaisa's Machine

Kaisa Mäensivu is one of the great names of the future of Finnish jazz.

The double bassist started her studies at the Sibelius Academy and later continued them in New York, which also became her home. Currently, Mäensivu has her own band Kaisa’s Machine and also performs in numerous ensembles in Finland and abroad. Through Kaisa’s Machine, Mäensivu has found the best possible way to fulfil her musical vision.

Founded in 2015, the band’s first album was titled In the Key of K and was released in 2017.

The album presented a mature view on modern jazz in the form of Mäensivu’s compositions. In New York, Mäensivu has found a new, more progressive and uncompromising direction for her music, which conveys storytelling, composition, surprise and the prominence of double bass. The band’s second album, Taking Shape, was released on 7 July 2023 under the New York label Greenleaf Music.
