J.S. Bach's Matthew Passion has been an integral part of Suomen Laulu's Easter repertoire ever since 1921. This annual tradition has only been interrupted a few times; first by WWII and, more recently, the global pandemic.
On this Maundy Thursday, this passion of passions will ring again in the high vaults of the St. John's Church in southern Helsinki, when Suomen Laulu, the Finnish Baroque Orchestra, soloists and youth choirs perform this masterpiece under the direction of the energetic conductor Jonas Rannila.
Estonian tenor Mati Turi will perform both as evangelist. The other soloists are Finnish: the part of Jesus is sung by the baritone Veikko Vallinoja, the soprano arias are performed by Johanna Isokoski, alto soloist is Jeni Packalen, tenor soloist is Juho Punkeri and bass soloist his brother Tomi Punkeri.
Responsible for coaching the choir is Esko Kallio.
