Horia Bernea: Painter of the Demodern

Kohta has collaborated with the Horia Bernea Estate and Ivan Gallery in Bucharest to present the prominent Romanian artist Horia Bernea (1938–2000).

He emerged in the mid-1960s and developed an intellectual yet personal and poetic approach that made him one of the most versatile European painters of his generation.  

Soon after the December 1989 revolution, Bernea was appointed Director of the Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest, which he turned into a total art installation based on a rich ethnographic collection. It received the European Museum of the Year award in 1996.  

The exhibition includes some 30 paintings from key series as well as sketches for the Museum of the Romanian Peasant (and photographic documentation by the artist Iosif Király).
