Flowers of the Wilderness

The co-production of Ensemble Nylandia, led by the world-famous Australian recorder player Genevieve Lacey and Matias Häkkinen, examines the wild excesses of Baroque music, from virtuoso concertos to delicate character pieces. 

Humanity's relationship with nature manifests on the one hand as an effort to control the chaos of nature by shaping geometrically beautiful cities and gardens, but on the other hand also as an idealization of jagged and boundless natural phenomena bursting with details and life. In music, nature was tried to be chained, e.g. by trying to force natural intervals into discipline and order through various tuning systems. However, the discordant and hauntingly beautiful natural harmonies will inevitably burst forth one way or another.
