The 8th was the last Symphony Bruckner was able to finish and hear before his death. His great idol was Wagner, and the listener cannot help noticing this in the Symphony’s mighty brass choruses. Another of his musical ancestors was Beethoven, and especially his 9th Symphony, which begins in much the same way, as if in the primeval mists of the Old Testament.
