The Kaamos Chamber Choir and Somnium Ensemble perform a work seldom heard in concert, the All-night Vigil by Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928–2016).
This very special choir and top soloists will be conducted by Elisa Huovinen and Visa Yrjölä.
The All-night Vigil (1971–1972/1997) is one of the main works in Rautavaara’s choral oeuvre. Composing an orthodox work, Rautavaara was aiming to reach a connection with the ancient Byzantine tradition, while also using the means of modern choral music.
What inspired the composer was a visit as a child to the Valamo Monastery in Karelia, just before the Winter War, but the work also aligns with a general interest in mysticism prevailent in his music.
