Dissonance and Consonance

The Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) is regarded as one of the greatest composers of European classical music. Mozart lived during the Classical period and he composed symphonies, operas, concertos, sacred music and chamber music.

On the programme of FiBO’s late summer chamber music concert we have one of the master composer’s most beloved string quartets (KV 465), known by its nickname the “Dissonance” quartet. Already in the beginning of the work there are ingenious tensions and releases, which morph into new tensions as soon as they are released.

Particularly in the last decade of his life, Mozart studied chromatic harmony in a for his time exceptionally profound way. His “Dissonance” quartet, which was greatly admired by Haydn, was a product of that time.

Like Mozart, Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) was a prominent Austrian composer during the Classical period. He was the developer of the quartet style as we know it today, and in his “Fifths” quartet (Hob III:76) he creates gripping moments by playful use of the open fifth interval.

The ensemble performing in this concert started working together during the Covid pandemic and has since had the opportunity to hone their expression multiple times in FiBO’s popular summer chamber music concerts.
