On November 2nd, the Nordic dream folk trio Alterne will perform a concert in collaboration with the Nordic Culture Point on the UNESCO World Heritage island of Suomenlinna in Helsinki, as part of the Kekri celebration.

Alterne invites the listeners into an atmospheric landscape where innovation and tradition collide. “The record label calls their album dream folk, but there is plenty of crunch and bite in the music of this debut from the trio from Denmark and Estonia.

Alterne seeks to blend influences from traditional music especially from the Nordics with modern songwriting in Danish. The songs delve into various aspects of life, evoking vivid landscapes and intimate moments. With traditional instruments like violin, kantele, accordion, stomp box and vocals, Alterne creates an atmospheric musical landscape with harmonious melodies, repetitive motifs, and virtuosic melodies that underscore the musical narratives. They consciously blur the boundaries between folk, pop, and ambient, resulting in a timeless and unique musical expression.

On April 19, 2024, they released their debut album through the Danish label GO’ Danish Folk Music. In the magazine RootsWorld, it is written among other things about the album, “Alterne have made an astonishingly assured, ambitious debut, and created a unique, pan-European sound.” The album captures the essence of Nordic melancholy and tone, with the addition of refreshing new spices.

Alterne was founded by Danish singer Ida Marie Jessen, who is joined by two Estonian musicians the accordionist Maimu Jõgeda, and the violinist Kärt Tambet. They have all studied traditional music from various regions around the world, which influences their approach to composition and performance.
