Democracy or dictatorship?
Oki Räisänen accurately drew the twists and turns of Finnish politics in the 1930s. Political extremism plagued the country, which was building unity in the aftermath of civil war and economic depression. The press, which was also divided, followed and commented on events in Finland, Europe and the world. Windy times were conducive to political satire, rants and caricatures.
Oki Räisänen (1886–1950) became a cartoonist for Helsingin Sanomat in 1932. Oki accurately drew the twists and turns of domestic politics, but his pen also reached beyond Finland's borders when necessary.
