Archaeology Lecture by Prof. Necmi Karul about Taş Tepeler.

The Şanlıurfa Neolithic Research Project, known as "Taş Tepeler," conducts extensive archaeological research at eight sites in southeastern Turkey: Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe, Gürcütepe, Sayburç, Çakmaktepe, Harbetsuvan, Sefertepe, and Yeni Mahalle. These sites date back to the period when humans transitioned to settled life 12,000 years ago, marking significant developments in social and technological aspects. The foundations of present-day social dynamics and economic advancements were established during this period.

Research reveals that people of the time created impressive structures, exhibited high-level art, and advanced technology during this shift. Monumental structures served as communal areas for rituals, preserving traditions. The project participants aim to explore more sites in Şanlıurfa, such as Ayanlar, Mendik, Yoğunburç, Kurttepesi and Taşlıtepe. Karahantepe, with over 250 T-shaped megalithic blocks similar to Göbeklitepe, is part of this project, providing valuable insights into prehistoric life.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism collaborates with twelve institutions, including Turkish and international universities, emphasizing shared responsibility for the project's success. The ongoing research promises to deepen our understanding of prehistoric societies, their daily lives, and rituals.
