Standing beside the serene waters of Töölönlahti, Natascha Wohlgemuth, originally from Germany, reflects on the city that has become her home over the past two decades. What started as a short work placement led her to a career, a family, and a life she describes as ‘the whole package’.

“I came in the summer, which was an ideal time to arrive. The vibrant season offered a glimpse into what Helsinki does best: breathing natural beauty seamlessly into urban life, Natascha recalls.

As Global Sales Director at Woodio, Natascha is part of Helsinki’s thriving sustainability movement. Woodio is at the forefront of sustainable materials, creating a wood-composite alternative to traditional ceramics, reducing the carbon footprint of sanitary products.

“Working in such an inspiring environment and seeing a tangible positive impact is truly motivating.” She credits Helsinki’s straightforward work culture and minimal hierarchy.

Less worries, more quality of life

For Natascha, Helsinki offers the kind of environment where work and family life naturally coexist. As a mother of three, she appreciates the city’s strong infrastructure and family-friendly mindset.

“There’s a clear understanding here from both employers and the society that family life is important,” she explains.

Helsinki’s commitment to a high quality of life for families has created an ideal setting for raising children.

“My kids can go to school, head to their hobbies, and move around on their own – I don’t worry about them as much as I might in other cities.”

Favorite spots and simple pleasures

As a person who loves being outdoors year-around, Natascha enjoys Helsinki’s blend of urban life and nature. Töölönlahti, with its scenic waterside paths, is one of her favourite spots, along with Seurasaari, where she finds quiet and inspiration among the island’s lush trails.

But Natascha also values Helsinki’s cultural richness. She’s a regular at Musiikkitalo for concerts and Tavastia, a legendary live music venue. Another must-visit spot for Natascha is Oodi Library, a hub of activity beyond books.

“It’s such a beautiful space, and you can do so much there: rent rooms, use 3D printers, even book a practice room if you play an instrument. Oodi is the perfect example of Helsinki’s commitment to accessibility and community.”

A modern city built on connection

While mastering the Finnish language isn’t necessary for working in Finland,  Natascha encourages newcomers to embrace the Finnish language, even just the basics.

“Helsinki is very international, and people switch to English easily, but speaking Finnish opens up a different level of connection. People appreciate the effort, even if it’s minimal.”

Reflecting on her journey, Natascha describes her happiness in Helsinki as “the whole package.” The freedom to move safely, a balanced family and work life, and a society that values sustainability have made Helsinki her true home.

“Every season here has its own charm, from summer mornings on the islands to snowy winter walks. Helsinki is a city where you have it all, but in a real way.”
