The five-year-old band of musician brothers Jakke Aho and Juha Sundqvist plays gritty rock in a relaxed but intense style. Also featuring the phenomenal Pepe Alhqvist!
Five years ago, singer-bassist Jakke Aho and guitarist Juha Sundqvist decided to form a band and invited keyboardist Pekka Qvist and drummer Ossi Nykänen to join them. TRAVELING JONES was born, and the journey began!
Intensive practice, diligent gigging and laid-back studio work led to the band’s first release, Here Comes That Traveling Jones. From the start, it was clear that the band would play their own music and carefully selected music by other artists, both at their live shows and on their records.
It was also clear that the music the band played had a clear orientation towards rock – some might say it was Southern rock, while others might call it West Coast rock. What’s obvious is that the band is forging ahead with a rock attitude, but listeners are free to categorise the music however they like. The key is relaxed, swinging, skilful and intense playing.
The band has also previously collaborated with legendary musicians Eero Raittinen and Pepe Ahlqvist. The joint music-making had worked well and they wanted to continue it… and now they’re really leaning into Americana!
Pepe Ahlqvist
This Finnish blues legend needs little introduction; a career that started back in the ’70s has continued right up to the present day. Singer/harpist/guitarist Pepe Ahlqvist is still in excellent form; his vocals and playing are stylish and relaxed. The relaxed nature of the performances is also passed on to audiences: The longstanding collaboration between the Traveling Jones and Pepe is also clearly visible in their joint performances. The mutual respect among the musicians on stage and the great experiences offered to the audience are apparent, not least when they perform the songs together that were made popular by Pepe’s famous 80’s band H.A.R.P…. And, of course, we’ll get to hear Pepe’s elegant harmonica playing at the gigs!
