Ykspihlaja Kino Orchestra was founded in 2012 in Kokkola’s Ykspihlaja harbour district, tasked at first to compose music and accompany it live for Juho Kuosmanen's silent film Romu-Mattila ja kaunis nainen.

Since then, the Kino Orchestra has taken on a life of its own, performing mainly film music as new arrangements. Since then, the Kino Orchestra has also composed and performed music for other parts of Juho Kuosmanen's silent film trilogy, short films Moonshiners (2017) and Kaukainen planeetta, which premiered in 2023. Kuosmanen's film The Smiling Man (2016) also features music by the orchestra.

Kino Orchestra has also composed and performed music for classics from the silent film era, including William A. Wellman's 1920s film Beggars of Life.

The orchestra draws its inspiration from 1960s Italian music and Finnish dance music, but the orchestra's original lyrics shine a new light on nostalgic musical landscapes.

The Ykspihlaja Kino Orchestra’s vocalists are sisters Anna, Oona and Laura Airola, and it consists of other free musicians and theatre professionals. Kino Orchestra features guitarists Miika Snåre and Tuomas Asanti, trumpeter Miia Reko, bassist Reetta Kuisma and drummer Ilkka Tolonen.

The orchestra has performed extensively at international film festivals from Palm Springs, California to Paris and from St. Petersburg to Cannes, as well as at Katrina Kammarmusik Festival in Åland, Kaustinen Chamber Music Festival and Kino Laika in Karkkila.
