Magic is real and we deep dive into the magical world of Jaranas del Norte, a Helsinki-based collective that performs and promotes son jarocho, a folk musical style from Mexico.

Jarocho combines indigenous, Spanish, and African elements. It is traditionally performed during fandango celebrations: participative and communitarian gatherings that include improvised music, ”zapateado” dancing, and ”décima” poetry singing. What are the ways of making such important and wonderful traditions part of our regular life? Can we instill music tradition in new setup and keep the local alive? Today we deep dive into music locality and see is as a tool for advocating inclusion and diversity.

Since its creation in 2019, this pioneer project has offered concerts and workshops for institutions and festivals, including Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, Etno-Espa, Helsinki Festival, Feel Helsinki, the National Museum of Finland, the Museum of Impossible Forms, and Kolibrí Festivaali. In 2021, the band recorded its first EP production with the support of TAIKE.

Interview participants:
Yesmith Sánchez – singer, jarana player and DEI expert
Paola Nieto – zapateado dancer and cultural manager
