As the text for the finale of his second symphony Mahler took the hymn Auferstehung by the German poet Friedrich Klopstock. He also called his symphony “The Resurrection”.

It is not, however really a religious work; instead, it bears a universal message. In order to explain the message, Mahler added a poem praising life to the chorale text in the finale.
